The correct pot or tray is vital for overall aesthetic effect. Trays are usually blue, pale green or brown stoneware and are chosen to compliment the particular foliage colour of the plant. They are usually plain although some antique Chinese pots are decorated. Pots require large drain holes to allow free drainage and prevent root rot. Deeper pots are used for cascade and semi-cascade styles. Bonsai soils must drain well and retain water without waterlogging. A free-draining potting mix is required consisting of peat, loam and sand in equal parts. Frequency of watering depends on the tree and its location - pots should not dry out. Trees are regularly repotted and foliage and roots trimmed to keep the bonsai healthy. Bonsai are fertilised with low strength fertiliser. REGION: QLD > Brisbane |
