Map of Australia

Geographically one of the largest islands on earth Australia has a small population for it's immense size. Most of the people of Australia live along in coastline and mainly in the large capital cities. The Australian mainland lies between 10° and 39° South latitude and is one of the flattest continents on earth with the highest peak (Mount Kosciuszko) a meagre 2228 meters.

Most of Australia is dry, arid desert. The interior of the country is harsh and forbidding and the inspiration for legends and folklore. Large parcels of land are used for cattle and sheep some farms being larger than small European countries. The outback is the source of many legends and fokelore and the dreamtime of the aboriginal people.

The Australian democratic process is modelled on the English Westminster System of Government. The Australian Federation consists of six states (NSW, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania) and two Territories (Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory). The Australian Parliament consists of an lower house (The House of Representatives) and the Upper House (The Senate).

Most people associate Australia with kangaroos, beaches and an easy laid-back style of life. Australia is a beautiful land and the pride of its citizens is reflected in the beauty of their cities and towns. Although most people live on the coast the Australian spirit is strongly linked with the outback.

Australia in Pictures will seek to reflect some of this beauty. This website is, of course, a work in progress. Over the next decade thousand of photos will be added to the collection. Please feel free to contact me to provide your feedback.
